Israel's parliament has passed a law. Under the law, which was passed on Monday (April 1), the minister in charge of the relevant authorities will be able to stop the broadcasting of Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based media outlet, in Israel. The country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised such a move. French news agency AFP reported.
The law was passed by a vote of 70-10 in Parliament. With the passage of the law, authorities will be able to ban the content of foreign television channels. Not only that, the authorities will also have the authority to block foreign channels in Israel.
Netanyahu promised to take swift action to close Al Jazeera in Israel after the law was passed.
In January, Israel claimed that an Al Jazeera journalist and a freelancer killed in an airstrike in Gaza were terrorist operatives. Another journalist from the channel was wounded in a separate attack in Gaza the following month. Israel still claimed he was a deputy company commander of Hamas.
Israeli forces have been fighting Hamas in Gaza since October.
Al Jazeera rejected Israel's allegations. They claim that Israel is systematically targeting their workers in the Gaza Strip.
