The Iranian consulate in Damascus was destroyed by the Israeli attack

The Iranian consulate in Damascus, the capital of Syria, has been reduced to rubble by the Israeli attack. Syrian and Iranian media reported that Israel carried out the attack on Monday (April 1). The attack could further escalate tensions in the Middle East, with Iran and its allies stepping up attacks against Israel. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

A Lebanese intelligence source said Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, was among those killed in the Israeli strike. Iranian state television has claimed that several Iranian diplomats have been killed.

A Reuters reporter from the scene in Mejzeh district of Damascus said smoke could be seen rising from the rubble of a collapsed building. An Iranian flag was flying on a pole in front of the ruins. The foreign ministers of Iran and Syria appeared at the scene.

Israel has repeatedly attacked Iranian targets in Syria during its six-month war against Hamas in Gaza. As usual after Monday's attack, it declined to comment on the matter. An Israeli army spokesman said, "We do not comment on foreign media reports."

Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that five people were killed in the Israeli attack. Syria's state news agency Sanaa reported an unknown number of dead and wounded.

On October 7, the Israeli military launched a counter-offensive in the besieged Gaza Strip in response to an attack by the Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas. At the same time, Israeli forces have also carried out airstrikes against Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters and Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria. These groups are supporters of the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
