Robinho must serve rape sentence in Brazil
The court in Brazil has upheld the assault conviction of Robinho, the former AC Milan and Brazil striker, ruling that he must serve his nine-year prison sentence in his home country. The decision by Brazil's Superior Court of Justice (STJ), the highest court for non-constitutional matters, affirmed the validity of Italy's ruling.
In 2017, a Milan court found Robinho and five other Brazilians guilty of assaulting a woman in 2013 after allegedly intoxicating her at a nightclub. This conviction was upheld by an appeals court in 2020 and confirmed by Italy's High Court in 2022.
Robinho, 40, whose full name is Robson de Souza, resides in Brazil and has consistently denied the charges against him. As Brazil typically does not extradite its citizens, Italy requested last year that Robinho serve his sentence in his homeland.

Following the court's decision, Robinho's lawyer, Jose Eduardo Alckmin, stated that Robinho would surrender to authorities upon official notification.
While the rape conviction was not revisited in the Brazilian court, Robinho expressed hope in a recent interview aired by a local television channel that the court would scrutinize the fairness of the Italian verdict. He maintained his innocence, stating, "I was unfairly convicted in Italy for something that never happened."
