Russia has launched a massive attack on Ukraine's electricity infrastructure

Russia has launched a major attack on dozens of power plants in Ukraine. Over 1 million people in the country have been cut off from electricity. The office of the President of Ukraine said that these attacks were carried out on Thursday night.

Seven million residents of the Kharkiv region were left without electricity due to the Russian attack. In southern Odesa and southeastern Dnipropetrovsk regions, 200,000 residents remain without power. In addition, on Friday, more than 100,000 residents of the central Poltava region could not be supplied with electricity, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Oleksi Kuleba, said.

Meanwhile, the Russian attack damaged one of the two supply lines of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, Ukraine's Energy Minister Jerman Galushchenko said in a Facebook post.

The Atomic Energy Agency of Ukraine said the situation is hazardous and could increase the risk of creating an emergency at any moment.

Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. After the attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian army seized the power plant.

The news agency AFP, citing Ukraine's power supply company, reported that Russian airstrikes at night cut off electricity in seven regions. Many power plants were damaged in this attack.

"Dozens of power plants have been damaged," state-owned Ukrainergo said in a Telegram post. Seven regions are under blackout.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia carried out a major attack on Thursday night using 90 missiles of various types and 60 drones "made by Iran".

Zelensky said the targets of Russian terrorist attacks are as clear as possible to the world—power plants, fuel supply lines, hydroelectric dams, ordinary residential buildings, and even electric buses.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry said at least two people were killed in these attacks. 14 people were injured. Three others are missing.

After this attack, the president of Ukraine again called for the supply of weapons to Western countries. He said, "As much as the arms are delaying the arrival of our country, the Russian missiles are not delaying as much."

"We need air defense to protect people, structures, homes, and dams," Zelensky said. Our partners know exactly what we need. They can help us. Lives must be saved from the hands of these Inhumans of Moscow.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Russia also carried out a major attack on the capital, Kyiv. The armed forces of Ukraine claimed to have shot down 31 missiles that day. Some were also reported to have been injured by debris from the downed missile.
