Istanbul nightclub fire, at least 29 dead
At least 29 people have been killed and several seriously injured after a fire broke out at a nightclub under renovation in Istanbul, Turkey. The fire broke out on Tuesday (April 2). Authorities have detained some people for questioning. The US news agency AP reported the news about the country's officials and media.
At least eight people were injured, state news agency Anadolu Agency said. They were taken to hospital in critical condition.
The nightclub was closed for repairs. The nightclub was on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district in the European part of Istanbul.
Governor Davut Gul told reporters at the scene that the cause of the fire is being investigated. It is believed that the victims were involved in the repair work.
Law Minister Yilmaz Tunk said five people, including the club's manager, have been detained for questioning. One of them was in charge of repair work.
Earlier, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said the death toll was 15.
