Myanmar army lost another border town

The military regime that seized power in Myanmar three years ago has suffered another major defeat. This time, the junta forces lost control of the city on the eastern border with Thailand. On Friday (April 5), the rebel Karen National Union accepted the surrender of a junta battalion based in the town. The British media reported the news.

The ethnic Karen rebels, along with other anti-coup armed groups, have been fighting for weeks to take control of the key border town of Mayawaddi. Most of Myanmar's land trade with Thailand goes through Mayawaddy.

On Friday, the Karen National Union announced that an army battalion in Thanganinang, 10 kilometers west of Mayawaddy town, had agreed to surrender. Earlier, KNU offered to surrender the battalion engaged in the city's security.

After accepting the surrender offer, the Karen National Union posted a video of their fighters. It shows the fighters displaying a large amount of weapons seized from the junta forces.

Mayawaddi's loss of control is a serious blow to the junta government. In recent months, junta forces have also been driven out of large areas of Shan State bordering China and Rakhine, bordering Bangladesh.

In February 2021, the country's military overthrew the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup. Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing came to power. Since then, the junta government has been struggling to suppress rebellion in various areas.
